Festival Winners is the first volume in an on-going series of books that showcase Award Winning Film Makers. Probably a lot of information can be found on the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Winners, or maybe last years Cannes Film Festival… or maybe not. It should be easy enough to read about Lol Crawley for winning the Excellence in Cinematography Award at Sundance for Ballast, or maybe the Grand Prize at Cannes for Best Short Film by Chris Lavis and Maciek Sczerbowski for Madame Tutli-Putli. I’m sure they have something worth telling, some insight into the film making process of an award winning film that I would like to know. Cannes and Sundance seem a bit out of reach? Yeah, for me too. So what about the winners of the South Florida Film Festival, or maybe the St. Louis Film Makers Showcase? Or maybe the winner of "Best Editing" for the ScreamFest Horror Film Festival in Hollywood, or the "Best Musical Score" of the BendFilm Festival in Bend, Oregon? And surely the winning film makers from Australia and Europe also have something to say, and again, if there are tips or techniques or strategies that can make my own efforts more successful, then I want to know and I want to know now. Giving access to this information, and allowing the Winning Film Makers a voice – in their own words – about their own trials and successes, and the lessons they are willing to share, is what Festival Winners is all about! Many of the Film Makers, their films, and even the festivals they’ve won might be names you’ve never heard of. But, their words, their stories, their insights, and the wealth of knowledge that they are willing to share, is a huge resource I hope you’ll take advantage of. I know I will. His first short, AM Session was nominated for the "HBO Short Film Award" during the American Black Film Festival and can be found playing on HBO. Amanda McCarthy is the author and creator of the upcoming graphics novel series The Dark Places, a prolific blogger and film reviewer, and is pre-production on her first live action short Schizo.
